General Information

The City of Ames is conducting a recruitment to establish a Civil Service eligibility list for this classification. The list will be valid for up to one year from the date of certification by the Ames Civil Service Commission and may be used to fill one or more vacancies in this classification. In addition, City of Ames Civil Service employees who have previously held Civil Service status in this classification and are interested in voluntarily demoting or laterally transferring into the current vacancy must submit their application by the deadline.

Under the direction of the Public Works Operations Manager, manages a variety of activities performed by the Public Works Operations Division; performs supervisory work involving the use of judgment and planning ability in the repair and maintenance of transportation system elements including streets, alleys, shared use paths, sidewalks, storm sewer, drainage, right of way, and snow and ice control; performs related work as required.

The City of Ames has a compensation philosophy that the starting pay for our merit salary ranges establishes the salary for employees who meet minimum requirements of a position. The median of any merit salary range is for an employee who can reasonably meet all expectations of the position responsibilities without initial extensive training. In order for employees to have an opportunity to grow within their position, we may consider a candidate's education, experience, and skills above the minimum requirements when looking at a salary closer to or slightly above the median. Qualifications

Education and Experience: An Associate's degree preferably in Civil Engineering Technology, Public Administration or a related field and five years of experience in construction, maintenance, and repair of public infrastructures; preference given to candidates that can demonstrate supervisory experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered.

Licenses and Certificates: Must possess a valid driver's license and be able to obtain a type A Commercial Driver's License within six months of appointment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Comprehensive knowledge of the materials, methods, techniques, tools, and equipment used in transportation system and storm sewer maintenance and repair work; considerable knowledge in concrete and asphalt construction techniques; considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary to the safe performance of heavy manual work and equipment operation; thorough knowledge of traffic hazards and traffic safety principles, practices and procedures; considerable knowledge of the methods and operation of snow and ice control equipment; knowledge of principles of labor relations and the administration of collective bargaining agreements including progressive discipline; knowledge of engineering/Geographic Information Systems/storm sewer records; knowledge of techniques used in trenching.

Skill in planning, organizing, assigning, supervising, and evaluating public works operations and crew activities; skill in evaluating and documenting employee performance; skill in determining and forecasting the needs for transportation system maintenance or repair services and scheduling such services; skill in responding to and resolving citizen concerns and request for service.

General Physical Characteristics: The work involves sitting 50 percent of the time; sitting and using arm/leg controls 10 percent of the time; standing (but not walking) 20 percent of the time; standing and walking 20 percent of the time; occasionally lifting objects under 10 pounds; occasionally lifting objects from 10 to 25 pounds: occasionally lifting objects from 25 to 50 pounds; and infrequently lifting objects over 50 pounds.

Vision Requirements: The minimum standard for use with those whose work deals largely with preparing and analyzing data and figures, accounting, transcription, computer terminal, extensive reading, visual inspection involving small defects or parts, use of measurement devices or assembly of parts at distances close to the eyes.
