Description:The
Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is recruiting for a
Right of Way Design Technician I, II, III or Designer I,II,III.The Design Technician I, II, III will be responsible for performing a variety of technical and pre-professional drafting and design duties. The Designer I,II,III will be responsible for developing and maintaining right-of-way plans necessary for highway construction, operation, and maintenance.

QualificationsRequired Education and Experience: Design Technician I: - The required knowledge and skills are typically acquired through a High School Diploma or equivalent that includes a class or classes that address CADD, Trigonometry, and Geometry. Engineering experience, drafting experience, or applicable MDT experience can be substituted for education on a one for one basis.
Design Technician II: - The required knowledge and skills are typically acquired through a High School Diploma or equivalent that includes a class or classes that address CADD, Trigonometry, and Geometry.
- At least one year of technical training or experience in design drafting technology that includes a working knowledge of computer aided drafting and design (CADD) software packages.
- Certifications, licensure, or other credentials include: N/A
- Prior engineering experience and/or prior MDT experience is preferred.
Design Technician III: - The required knowledge and skills are typically acquired through a High School Diploma or equivalent that includes a class or classes that address CADD, Trigonometry, and Geometry.
- At least 1.5 years of technical training or experience in design drafting technology that includes a working knowledge of computer aided drafting and design (CADD) software packages. A related associate degree is equivalent to 2 years of work experience.
- Certifications, licensure, or other credentials include: N/A
- Prior engineering experience and/or prior MDT experience is preferred.
Designer I: - The required knowledge and skills are typically acquired through a combination of education and experience equivalent to related AAS/2-years college/vocational training.
- Minimum of one year of design-related work experience.
Designer II: - The required knowledge and skills are typically acquired through a combination of education and experience equivalent to related AAS/2-years college/vocational training.
- Minimum of 2 years of related work experience.
Designer III: - The required knowledge and skills are typically acquired through a combination of education and experience equivalent to related AAS/2-years college/vocational training.
- Minimum of 3 years related work experience.
This agency may use a training assignment. Employees in training assignments may be paid below the base pay established by the agency pay rules. Conditions of the training assignment will be stated in writing at the time of hire.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:Design Tech I, II, III: - Knowledge of design drafting technology.
- Working knowledge of computer aided drafting and design (CADD) software packages.
- Skills in effective written and verbal communication with a variety of audiences.
- Ability to operate a computer, calculator, and other office equipment, with demands for accuracy in all aspects of work.
- Ability to compare data, copy or transcribing data, computing arithmetic, geometric, and trigonometric operations, and compiling information and organizing it into a logical format.
- Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines.
Designer I, II, III: - Knowledge of Civil Engineering, Highway Design, Right-of-Way Design, AutoCAD, Land
- Surveying, Drafting, Land Law Interpretation.
- Broad knowledge of engineering practices and principles and construction methods, processes and procedures, computer-assisted drafting and design software, and engineering techniques are required for projects of moderate complexity.
- Preferred journey level knowledge of federal guidelines and procedures regarding right-of way design.
- Skills in assessing complex and rapidly changing technological issues and national trends.
- Skills to work effectively in a high stress and multi-task environment.
- Skills in identifying root causes of problems and develop of alternative solutions
- Ability to evaluate multiple and ambiguous factors to resolve problems; to determine appropriate responses to design problems and deficiencies with minimal assistance or precedent.
- Skills in effective oral and written communication to assist with client, customer, or official contacts and communication pertaining to specific assignment or meetings.
- Ability to confidently challenge the status quo by experimenting with new ideas.
- Ability to accurately apply design standards and project requirements to specific circumstances.
- Ability to develop effective techniques and procedures to achieve goals and objectives.
- Ability to provide technical assistance, and guidance to team members to ensure effective operations and project activities.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; create a positive work climate.
