The
Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is recruiting for a
Materials Engineer. This position serves as the State Materials Engineer. The position is responsible for directing the development and implementation of materials research; analytical laboratory testing; and construction methods, procedures, and technologies. Oversees special research and development projects to ensure contemporary practices and technology are utilized; develops plans for the research, analysis, and implementation of innovative technologies to increase the quality, efficiency, safety, and cost-effectiveness of major statewide construction projects and Department operations; and develops theoretical models, applications, and design standards for Montana's unique and evolving transportation environment. Provides technical consultation and department representation for national materials standards and specification development initiatives (e.g., AASHTO Technical Studies, WASHTO, and WAQTC) to ensure that the State's interests are represented. This position reports to the Materials Bureau Chief.

Required Education and Experience:- The required knowledge and skills are typically acquired through a combination of education and experience equivalent to Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or a directly related engineering field.
- This position requires a minimum of 6 years of progressively responsible construction, engineering, and contracting experience.
- Certifications, licensure, or other credentials include: Registration as a Professional Engineer is required.
This agency may use a training assignment. Employees in training assignments may be paid below the base pay established by the agency pay rules. Conditions of the training assignment will be stated in writing at the time of hire.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:- The position requires knowledge of the concepts and theories of civil, structural, hydraulic, and traffic engineering; mathematics; statistics; public administration; program management; applied research methods and techniques; contract administration; road/bridge construction processes; state, federal, AASHTO, and FHWA standards; knowledge of applicable laws, rules and regulations; highway economic, safety, and efficiency issues; Engineering Division objectives; project and program planning; state, federal, AASHTO, and FHWA standards; project specifications. The position requires knowledge of the concepts and theories of the information technology; profession business process automation; data processing; data analysis; information systems development, implementation, and maintenance; user support and training; state and Department IT standards and computer hardware and software.
- The position requires skill in budgeting, management, and oversight of multiple and complex projects; communication; project implementation and developing and administering a variety of functions.
