Join our dynamic team to provide engineering expertise in capital improvement and traffic engineering projects. Your role will include conducting engineering studies, assisting in managing capital improvement projects, and ensuring the Village's infrastructure remains safe, clean, functional, aesthetically pleasing, and environmentally sound.
Distinguishing Characteristics: As an entry-level position within the Professional Engineering series, you will focus on professional engineering functions with guidance from the transportation team and management. This role is perfect for those who are just starting their careers in engineering, offering more guidance and instruction to help you develop your skills.
Essential Functions:Capital Improvement Projects Management:
- Assists Public Works leadership in managing capital improvement projects from design to completion, reviewing work of consultants and contractors, ensuring compliance with specifications, recommending modifications, and tracking payments.
- Assists in reviewing design elements, preparing requests for proposals, managing bidding processes, and recommending the award of work based on City policies and procedures.
- Assists in preparing contract documents and initiating change orders if necessary.
- Assists in the inspection of construction projects to ensure public improvements conform to City codes and approved plans.
- Assists in developing and administering program budgets and procedures.
- Assists in preparing RFP's, contracts, consultant selection, and negotiating fees, if necessary.
- Working with citizens to gain feedback, preparing public meeting materials, and presenting projects at public meetings.
- Coordinating project activities with other agencies and organizations.
Traffic Engineering:
- Assists with traffic studies, speed surveys, signal timing analysis and crash data analysis.
- Manages the City of Greenwood Village's Traffic Calming Program (NTCP).
- Manages the City of Greenwood Village's Street Light maintenance initiative, which includes annual structural inspections, upgrades, inventory and coordination with on-call contractor.
- Assists with the management of the City of Greenwood Village's traffic signal maintenance, which includes annual cleaning and painting, street name panel replacement, structural inspections.
- Provides engineering support on traffic projects, research and evaluate data, prepare designs and specifications, and make technical recommendations to higher-level staff.
Example of a typical day:Your day involves a mix of office and field work. Begin your day by reviewing project updates and emails, ensuring all ongoing projects are on track. Attend meetings with senior engineers or project managers to discuss current projects and challenges.
Mid-morning, head to the field to conduct traffic studies, gather data on traffic patterns, or perform radar speed surveys. Document your findings and return to the office to analyze the data, identify areas for improvement, and prepare preliminary designs or reports.
After lunch, work on preparing or reviewing design elements for a capital improvement project, ensuring compliance with City standards and regulations. Draft requests for proposals, evaluate bids, or prepare contract documents.
In the afternoon, attend a public meeting or session with citizens to discuss project scopes, gather feedback, and address concerns. Prepare materials for these meetings, present your findings, and take notes on public input to incorporate into project plans.
Towards the end of the day, review the budget and schedules for ongoing projects, make adjustments as needed, and ensure all documentation is up to date. Collaborate with other agencies or departments to coordinate project activities and ensure everything progresses smoothly.
Position Requirements:Knowledge and Skills:
- Knowledge of mathematics as applied to engineering work.
- Familiarity with engineering design principles and practices.
- Understanding of construction principles in the public works industry.
- Proficiency with modern office procedures, methods, and computer equipment.
- Functional understanding of traffic modeling software (Sychro, Vistro) and ArcGIS.
Abilities:
- Eager to learn and apply engineering methods, practices, and techniques.
- Capable of interpreting and applying pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
- Skilled in performing technical research and solving engineering problems.
- Able to develop, review, and modify civil, transportation, or traffic engineering plans, designs, and specifications.
- Proficient in operating computer engineering systems.
- Clear and concise communicator, both orally and in writing.
- Able to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
- Physically capable of performing work, including moving around job sites and lifting up to 50 pounds.
- Able to make sound decisions and demonstrate intellectual capabilities.
- Maintain effective audio/visual discrimination and perception.
Experience and Training:
- Experience preferred, but not required.
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in civil engineering, transportation engineering or traffic engineering.
Certificates or Licenses: Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the State of Colorado and a driving record satisfactory to obtain coverage by the City's insurance carrier.

Hazards:Fieldwork may involve hazardous situations including traffic areas, bridge structures, falling materials, fumes, confined spaces, and drainage ways. Must be physically capable of safely moving about on construction sites. Job requires occasional physical effort requiring lifting of objects weighing over 50 pounds.
Requires shift, weekend or off-hour/day work; may receive calls on a 24-hour basis and may be required to appear on-site as a result of an emergency situation during off-duty hours.
